"EOMEO AND JULIET."
.Theperformance of this'masterpiece of the bard of Avon attracted a large audience to the Theatre Royal Jasjb s evening.; The principal characters.of the play were! cast as follows:-—Jtomeo, Mr St.: Laurence; JTuliet, Miss Eose- Oaborhe f Mercutio, Mr Chaplin ; Friar Laurence, Mr Burford; Nurse, Mrs McGowan.;; Lady Capulety Miss, Ji Marsh ; Capulet,; Mr McGowan; To enable'the play to be \ finished at a reasonable hour, it had been' considerably cut down, but this process.; did? not interrupt the"V toead <rfyth;e stery.; Mr St. Lawrence; as Eoineo, depicted the ill-starred Veroneser youth most realistically—at leastour ideal of what Borneo should be was similar to Mr St. Laurence's representation. There' was just; a little staginess in some of his utterances, : which, however, does not detract much from the merits of a really good conception. Miss Osborrie's Portia had created a most favorable impression in our mind of < that lady's histrionic ability.; Our; good opinion was considerably increased; after witnessing her Juliet. Her perfect i acquaintance with the laws pi "elocution,; and. her intimate and unfaltering, kno^.i ledge of the text* were well, shewn ml this j character, and at the conclusion of several | passages the audience were quite carried'; away, and testified their approval with loud j of approval.:' Herrefiditiori of Itfie i passage, commencingrr, ,t ; ,,, f j "*arewell! fclbdkno'Vvs wlien'we shall meet again."; was simply perfection. Mr Chaplin as! Mercutio, the rollicking friendof iltomeo,l gave further testimony of bis powers as a | delineator of Shakesperiani characters. ■ Mr Burford's performance on the role of; Friar .Laurence was,'excellent, as also , was Mrs McGowan as nurse; and the] minor characters were well up to the | mark., Through some defect jn the stage management the balcony scene jwas marred by, the lowering ofithjS curtain before the time. Ati the (conclusion Mr St. Laurence end 'Miss Osborne, _were honored by a call before thVcnrtaiti; y ~ J ■': ■'■ V: t6night. " .. t: + To-night this! talented company will perform the dramatisation of Miss Braddon's celebrated story, "East •LyOne,' 1 with Miss Osboine as Lady Isabel Vane, and Mr Chaplin as' Sir Francis. ;;itl:'':
