Amusements ; THEATRE ROYAL. Manager ... R. J. DeLias Stngo Mannrjor Biand Holt THE LAST NIGHT BUT FOUR. Engagement of the iuvourito Tragedian— MR. G. D. CHAPLIN, And the Unequalled EnerKsh Artiste— MISS. ROSE OSBORNE, : .-.'■<; THIS (TUESDAY) EVENING, JULY 22. Will bo presented, for the ITR9T TIME, the Original Burlesque ■ Comedy, by W.- ' S. Gilbert, entitled— ' ENGAGED; or, the Scotch Marriage. Notb..—The author's intention in writing this play was to try the tffoct of treating n broadly farcical subjecfc in a gruve and earnest spirit, and without extravngance in tone, gesture, or coßtume. It- has ' always b*i»n found where the part 9 were played in acsordance with this theory, the comedy has been eminently successful. The manager has deemed it judicious to taTte the audience thus far into his confidence before the rising of the curtain, that the spirit of tho work mny ho understood before the comtnoncement of the play, which might otherwise occupy more time in diviriirigthe meaning of the author. This Comedy has been played throughout the entiro Britioli Kingdom during the'past year;and-a-half, where it has met with the most overwhelming success. Ifc was first produced in London, at the Thenfcre Boyal, Haymarket, October 3, 1877, where it enjoyed a run of several months. , CHEYIOTT. HILL, .a youm? jnan of properfcy/ MR G.
