Thursday, LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
In reply to the Hon. Sir F. D. Bell, Col. Whitmore said returns of all the education reserves in the colony would shortly be published. Mr Waterhouse, in moving for a roturn severely ensured Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Larnach for being mixed up with Joint. Stock Companies in London, and in Southland. He also blamed Mr Ballance for sending home a telegram on the sub] ect. Sir F. D. Bell endorsed Mr Waterhouse's statements, but defended Sir J. Vogel and Mr Larnach. Colonel Whitmore said the Government had defended Sir Julius Vogel and induced him to withdraw, but had no control over Mr Larnach. He was certain from the high character of Mr Ballance that he would send no improper telegram. THE LATE NATIVE MEETING. .Dr Pollen moved for an official report : of the late native meeting, and blamed Mr Sheehan for making an improper use of confidential telegrams left by Dr Pollen in the Native Office. Colonel Whitmore defended Mr Sheehan, and condemned the whole native policy from 1869 to Sir Donald McLean's death. Dr Pollen had begun an improvement which had been kept up since. The motion was carried;. . THE BPEAKERBHIP. The Hon. John Hall moved for the correspondence on the appointment of Speaker. He quoted a report that the Govern ment had told Majqr Richmond that the Ministry wanted a Speaker who would support their bills. Colonel Whitmore said the report was beneath contempt, and: Sir W. Fitzherbert said the Premier had offered him the position in the most handsome manner, with no pledge whatever: I The Council cheered the announcement joudly. The Council adjourned at 11 a.m.
