J. D. Wickham Turned Methodist.
" Have you heard' the news " asked a gentleman in our office this morning. Of course we are always ; hearing news, but we did not know to what news 6%r friend referred to, so we abstractedly queried " What news P " ;: . "Why, that J.D;,WJckham has joined the Methodist Church, and has taken the place occupied by, ,Ijhe |ast minister." We were immedi sately interested, and said, "You don't say so." Just then the improbability of such a contingency struck us, and we remarked to bur informant: * — " Young man, if you think to take us in your vastly mistaken. J. D. Wickham a Methodist parson, ha ha ,ha I!'j.and unable to control our mirth we burst into an uncontrollable salvo of cachinnations. When we recovered we reminded bur friend of the awful punishment inflicted on perverters of the truth, but he reasserted that what he had said was perfectly true. :•'/..'; ; "You see> sir," he continued, "you don't understand me. The impression' I wish to convey, was this: Ton' seeJ.D. has shifted next door, to , ( theMethodist Church, and his house jojiosit. So I was right in saying he joined. the church; and the house.he, occopier used formerly to shelter;'the'head'oif the Methodist minister., I''l'" ll ' ; The wily fellow grinned and' deftly dodged out of the door as we took aim at him with the " Imperial dictionary."
