Thames Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Council for tlio purpose of receiving the report of tho Committee re tlie water supply was held at the Council Chambers last evening. 'Present—Crs McGowan (in tho chair) Ehrenfried, Mennie, Wilson, Speight, and Hansen.

The Town Clerk read the report of the Committee as follows :—" Your Committee have the honor to report re the purchase of the County Council's interest in tho Domestic Water Supply, that after protracted negotiations and considerable correspondence, they have been, unable to arrive at any derinite conclusion, their proposals and offers having been met with counter proposals and conditions, which youv committee do not feel justified in recommending for your adoption. Your committee desire to draw your attention to the accompanying correspondence, and on account of the interests at stake would recommend for you? consideration the letter of Mrßrodie, County Chairman, of July 7, and that no responsibility be taken unless the County Council agreoto assist in obtaining legislative measures enabling , the Borough Council to levy a rate in those districts using the water, and in the event of'no legal title or power to levy being obtained during next session of Parliament, the said £700 mentioned in letter of July 7th, shall not bear interest, the whole to be contingent upon tho financial position'of the Borough.—James McGowan, J. E. HainseN." ; • ,'■ " " .. ''

» Or Speight aslced wouM the accepting of the Tflport put Mr McCaul in a better position "than before. Cr McGowan said that, though" the Borough was in a position to levy a water rate, lthey could not do it this year. t Cr 'Ehrenfried said it appeared to him 1/h'at, unless ah' Act was' passed, there was no means by which they could strike a fiite 1 thi3 year. If _.the' County Council willing ,to assist tbem in getting an Act "passed—and lie knew they would— there would be no difficulty. If the County opposed them there would be great difficulty. However he.was assured that tft'e County wo'nld assist them in this matter. He thought, the County agreed to their wishes on the principal points, and were filling to wait for, the money. Cr Sjpeigh'j; said the report committed them to nothing.

Cr Ehrenfried said that the Bank of JN"ew Zealand had promised to advance £1000 for the liquidation of MeCaul's account when the transfer of the supply was effected. ■..',:.

After soaie further discussion Cr Speight moved and Cr Wilson seconded, the adoption of the report. Cr .Ehrenfried moved that the offer of the t (Qounty Council be accepted. Cr Hansen seconded. Carried unanimously. This concluded the business.
