Melbourne, July 8. Parliament was opened today; by the Governor, who, in a speech, said that the present was a very serious juncture in view of the universal depressed state o^ trade. He ; has reason to believe that Prince Charles will visit the International Exhibition. 1 The Government had confirmed the Peninsular and Oriffctal mail .contract. They announced no increase *of taxation, and considered the loan a brilliant success. They hoped the result of the mission to London would, prove beneficial, and conducive to the satisfactory progress of legislation.

The speech announced bills for the amendment of the Land Tax and Eeform of Constitution, with tho object of securing a final adjustment of this difficulty between the Council and the Assembly, land thus avoid reoccurrence of disastrous deadlocks. The Address in Eeply was carried with* |out opposition. Ganrison's motion in the Assembly was withdrawn. Arrived : Arawata. , The Government have intimated that they purpose introducing a bill to amend the present electoral law, and numerous other important' measures 'unless the Eeform Bill should absorb all other questions. -^ ■;■;.- Thirday, In the Legislative Assembly last night, on the Speaker announcing the return of Deakin for East Bourke, Gnanson moved a protest. '
Deakin has since resigned, owing to the strictures passed upon his conduct. i ■ ;■ : ; : ; Sydney, This day. 5 ■ The Legislative Council rejected Sir John Robertson's proposed clause in the Land Bill in consequence of which the measure has been dropped. \ In tha •:course of the debatef in \ the Assembly last night the Premier stated that he intended to||iubmit a motion in to the action of the Council on |the Land Bill.
