COUNTY ROADS.

', : (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) I Sib,—l am sorry to have to draw your , attention to the wretched state of the t ; roads between Puriri and Hikutaia, the first reason being that I got my hone badly bogged yesterday while riding to t Shortland; and only he waa a strong ;' animal he would have stack fait in the > County mud, for a road it can't'be called. The road was formed out of swamp land two years ago, left •since without repairs j and is fast becoming a series of bog holes, so that I can't drive either fat eat* tie or cows springing, nor even fat sheep,,. v . to your market on this rotten County road. I have spoken to and drew the attention of the road overseer to these boggy places. I have also spoken to the indefatigable County Chairman, and that powerful being threw the blame on the ; * Government. He said the Government H owed him (God bless the mark) £14,000 sterling; if so, he ought to apply for it, and get the tin, and repair the road with it. However, between both parties—like falling between two stools-rthe road has " come to grief. Mr Editor, knowing the County Chairman to have a wholesome dread of your powerful pen, just use your influence with him' (our most worthy Chairman) to get his men to fill up those " bog-holes " with a little manuka, rushes or fern, in lieu of that more substantial stuff called metal or broken stones; and ' you; will be confering a favor on all travellers if you succeed in getting the bogs repaired. Please let the ratepayers '" know the amount of the County overdraft.—l am, too,, H. AILIY. ' Hikutaia, July 2nd, 79.
