Thames Borough Council.

The ueual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs Graham, Brassey, Speight, Wilson, MoGowan, and Hansen. MINUTE 3. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' EICHMOND STBIET. A letter was read from Mr P. Birch, of Richmond street, calling attention to the bad state of the footpath near his residence. Eeferred to the Works Committee with power to act. A letter from Mrs Bichards, .calling attention to the bad state of the footpath leading to her residence, was also read, and referred to the Works Committee.

HABT AND HOBN. ; A letter was read from Messrs Hart and Horn, contractors for straightening the Earaka Creek, relative to a dispute between themselves and the Foreman of Works. The writers stated that if, as the: Foreman wished, they used dressed stone that alone would cost £350.

Cr. Graham moved that Crs Speight, McGowan, and the mover be appointed.a committee to visit the ground with the contractors and Foreman of Works, and report at once to the Council. On the motion of Mr Brassey the standing orders were suspended, for the purpose of asking Messrs Hart and Horn if they were willing to be bound by the decision of the Commutes; Cr McGowan protested against the Council meddling with the matter. After further discussion the,motion was carried. ' cabteb's house. An application was received from the Borough carter, A. Campbell, asking for a chimney to be erected to his residence. The Town Clerk read a letter from the secretary of the recent meeting in Auck-. land re the proposal to pump at 400 feet level, conveying to the Council the resolutions of the meeting. _„.,■ . , The Mayor explained that it had been arranged that the two Councils should meet the delegates of the Auckland meeting at 5 p.m. on Friday; j BOABDOF HEALTH. The report of the Health Officer shewed that 4 deaths had occurred in the Borough during the past month. ; : , JIEPOBT OF BELIEVING OFFICER; : The report of the Relieving Officer was read and adopted. Leave of, absence for one week was granted to Mr Mason. BEPOBT OF FOREMAN OB WOBKS. :iThe report of the Foreman of Works was read and adopted. BEPOBT OF WOBKS COMMITTEE. " The report of this Committee was read and adopted. BEPOBT OF FINANCE COMMITTEE.

The report of the Finance Committee was read and adopted. PETITION. Cr Brassey presented a petition from several residents, drawing, attention to the bad state of the Karaka road footpath. Referred to Works Committee. SUBSIDY ON GOLD DUTY. v Cr McGowan said that he noticed that the Counties of Grey and Inanguhuarf gold-producing districts—were moving in the matter of getting a subsidy on the gold duty. The Mayor pointed out that the Government had already decided not to subsidise gold duty, but at the same time, there could be no harm in stirring in the matter.

Cr Speight said that, if gold duty was to be considered as rates, they should certainly endeavour to get a subsidy on it.

On the motion of Cr McGowan a committee was appointed to take action in the matter. THB CHABGES AGAINST THE INSPBCTOB OF • , .:. ; NUISANCES. Cr Brassey's resolution, re the enquiry into the charges made against the Inspector of Nuisances by Mr Hart, was then considered. He moved the appointment of a committee to enquire into the charges.
