Auckland re the Big Pump.

At the Police Court to-day John Drake was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment for borrowigjpmoriey on the security of a Crown Grant entrusted to him for safe keeping. , Prisoner is a very old jsettler, and is a weilknown habitue of Queen street.

At a meeting of directors of various mining companies on the Thames held this morning to consider the question of re-starting the Big Pump, the Mayor proposed a resolution expressing confidence in the companies interested in draining the Grabamstown flat to undertake the charge and raise a sum of two hundred pounds per month, if the County and Borough Councils supplement that Bum from their gold duties by an amount sufficient to maintain the pumps.

Mr J. M. Clarke proposed that the companies interested should work the pumps at the four hundred feet level, provided the Councils hand over the gold duty raised within certain defined limits; - the duty to be guaranteed for a period of twelve months, and any excess of duty to be handed back to the Coun-

cils. • The latter motion was carried nem con. - ' , The Chairman and Mr J. M. Clarke were appointed a deputation to wait on the Councils. ' The meeting of the Cure Golimining Company lapsed for want of a quorum. The directors report th,B mine is being

thoroughly opened up, and that any day a good find may come. They recommended a reduced honorarium of £30 for the ensuing half year. The balancesheet showed the receipts to bo £517, and the expenditure—loss a balance of £70— £517. Assets, £149: Liabilities—accounts owing, £206 10s 6d; balance, £213 7s6d; dividends declared to date, £17,000.
