We cull the following from a recent copy of the S.M. Herald:— " Death i» gradually lessening the chain that binds the present of the colonies with the past. Intelligence has just been
received here of the death of Mr John Lazar, at Hokitika, father of Mr Samuel Lazar of the Sydney Theatre Eoyal. The deceased was' not only a very old and respected colonist, but ho was one of thoso kind-hearted genial gentlemen who endeared himself to all who were acquainted with him. He died at the ripe old age of 79 years. He was orginally a solicitor in London, having served bis articled under Alderman Harmcr, and came out to Australia 42 years ttSP.!,«,«He was manager^ of the tona Theatre here, and proceeded first to Melbourne and thence to Adelaide, where he joined Mr George Coppin, I now one of the proprietors ot the Md*> bourne Theatre, in the management of the Adelaide Theatre Royal. He wag elected an alderman of Adelaide when the municipality "was proclaimed., and vwiwr,r Mayor there for four,years ; eon»ecutively|/ Ho was the first who introAuc|»d into Adelaide the Mayor's Court; and; When he retired from the position He h'eld'thM We received.a testimonial of; a fery flattering) kind, from the members of the Bar, for the eyen.handed justice lie ■■ had> meted out.
