Constabulary to take the Field.
Settlers to Protect the Frontier,
- If after the Government has done all to prevent bloodshed hostilities should take place the Government will at ouce send their flying column of constabulary, now over 400 strong, to break up the Parihaka settlement, leaving theproteotion of the Taranaki frontier and WaingbngOpt) to the settlers in their respective districts. Major Roberts, who covered the/retreat at Okatukuin the last war has been sent fo^ to take command of the. Constabulary. Major Itfoakes will control affairs on tne Waingongoro boundary.
The".Wgapuhis have offered to furnish a contingent if the Government wish. Jlewi also said he would send five hnndred Maniapoto if required. Even without the Ngatiporu contingent the Government calculate being able to place nearly a thousand friendly natives in the disturbed district should occasion arise.
