BLASPHEMY.
(To the Editor of the Erening Star.) Sik,-—There has recently been issued from the rationalistic press of Germany a work of a thousand pages which, all through, entirely ignores the existence of tho Deity. The- author's name is Haeckliel. There is also another work just out by a University man of the 'United States which is nearly as large as tho above, and of the same' Character, which seeks to get rid of Satan and the demonism of tho Bible, stock and ." block: His name is Conway. The. , getting rid of Satan, or the Devil, is only a kind of .preparation for getting rid of the Deity, for both must be accomplished in men's minds in order- to prepare many ! *■ kind for what is predicted in Holy Writ; for it is the Devil's intention shortly to introduce to the world his head and chief Demon from the bottomless pits-(abyss) -<•'■ (.Rev. 17.8 and lie*. 13) whom we are told is to, sit,in the restored Temple at Jerusalem declaring' that he is'God'Miad. ■wfcom-nearly.ali maukind are to believe ,and worship. So there must be prepare*^ tion. Men must cue; if ay. or. another re^ ject both the true God and "the Devil that they-may -the ..more Readily embrace'the counterfeit God "that the peril'- seis-up"; I Now this preparation is going on rapidly, and to this end we have)jthe greater part of the standard periodical press of the British metropolis .-admitting papers . which declare tho Bible to be altogether ' unworthy of credit,; and which treat the i .» idea of any Word of God as quite inadmissible and absurd.' -I .will,mention the Fortnightly Keview, the Contemporary .Review, Nineteenth - Century, Cornhill Magazine, Macmillan's Magazine, and Eraser's 'Magazine, also*.■ the:, Spectator, Examiner, Athen»um, and Academy. Here, then, in the great metropolis of Britain, are eight or" ten periodical'; pub- : lications of high position and great circulation, which habitually treat the Bible as an old Hebrew legend, entirely believed by - none.' The- immense -sale jOf . these ; - periodicals is an unerring index of the public mind, which- is daily and hourly • being poisoned,by sheer blasphemy, and being rapidly prepared to. cast oft God ''] and His revelation, altogether. But this is not all. The various daily and weekly •'" journals, not only in Britain's metropolis, but throughout the world, extract the poison, and spread it broadcast among the,, people everywhere. So one way or" another, the Bible and the Deity are ignored and. set at all truth is given to'the winds, and mankind is fast' driving into Atheism, as did Frenchmen, -'■ by the same means, —Atheistic literature —immediately before, the great French Revolution. So dexteriously is the poison prepared and laid, and so invitbg is the -f trap, that people are caught and poisoned ere they are aware of any danger besetting their path. ■ ." •, v , - You, sir, are not aware, I dare say, that,' . in your article "Omnipotent" in last \\ Saturday's issue you have given insertion:;; I s to one of the most unmitigated pieoespf blasphemy that has ever appeared in any ■'«' journal, large or small. You don't know < it, or I feel certain you would not have '{ inserted it fyou have done it unwittingly. •'-' The writer of that article seeks nothing less than the destruction, of the Omnipotence, or all powerful character of'the ,< Deity, and has in so doing lowered Him to the positionof a^gold digger; (As for r his reasons for changing the word Omnipotent to infinite, they are. unworthy of notice. The man is an ignoramus, in -•. addition"~to "being a fool, for-both words - in the English language imply the same ideic. v ■ '' '-■. O ,' '.) j"/j i :In "Eogets Thesaurus" of English}! words and phrases, the attributes and perfections of the Deity ire thus stated —Infinite power, Infinite wisdom. Goodness, Justice*, Truth,.Mercy, Omnipotence, Omniscience/ 1 Omnipresence, Unity, Imi mutability, Holiness, Glory, Majesty, Sovereignty, Infinity, Eternity. \Now, the well understood meaning of these English words is sustained on "almost every page of the Bible,' and that man is an ass or—as that Bible calls him —a fool, who seeks in the least measure to limit these majestic perfections;':of the ' Deity, and will certainly bring down upon his devoted head,the r fearful judgments of that omnipotent power. ' ■ ';■<.-',=
It is a terrible sign of the times that men are nowveverj?thereto be found that make themselves '-equal 1 to °and eren'-: superior to their Creator. Yea, to deny Him altogether, or lessen the. perfections of His character, which'is about 5 the samel thing, for to curtail only one of His attributes is to destroy the whole. The. end of it all is—No God. That iirwhat* the } German writer alluded to above, it now proclaiming to poor distressed humanity, No God, and a host of others' also every--where. Many of them do this and then apply,-to, .the dead to teach them. But I have "said that Mr Greg,; your: author, lowers the position of the Deity to that of a gold-digger.. His own words shall be the proof 'of my assertion \J- 'Here tlicy are: —" We hare only to conceive the Creator good and powerful to a degree, which, in reference to-human beings, may fairly be called\inpnite, but still "conditioned" — hampered n%iay be by the attributes, qualities' and imperfections of the material on which Me has to operate ; bound possibly ■ by \< laws or, properties „ *»-. herent in the nature of the material." I have italicized the words to make them conspicuous, so that your readers may see the blasphemy more clearly. .Now,, .a gold-digger is in exactly the same dilemma ■' that this wretched scribbler places the Creator and sustained of the Universe, the Almighty, "in whom we all live and move, and have our being." The digger is "conditioned" indeed, and hampered very much with'the material he operates upon ere he gets the gold—poor fellows 1 Well they know it, especially just now. J Butj oh, the blasphemy to place the Deity in a like situation 2 The .Reformers, when they looked around and saw nothing worse than the Papacy, they must needs pronounce that to be Anti-Christ, and this has been believed by Protestants, ever *? since; but that; cannot be An ti-Christ which acknowledges and, proclaims the > Divinity of Christ and the Omnipotence of the Deity,' however corrupt the sysikeritt may bo. Why perpetuate the falsehood? f Call a spade a spade. Verily, there it,. something abroad in the world now that " looks like Anti-Christ for it denies both Father and Son and wholly ignores; their' . Word of Inspiration. This is the Spirit '• of A fnti-'Christ, and-.?itjs.th« earnest that;/, the foul and lawless demon, the " Sonof.jiy Perdition " will be on to mankind before ' they are aware of it. 1881 is not far off,
after that the second deluge, which .will' sweep the Atheists and their connexions off the earth. There are numerous branches of the evil tree, and not the least of these branches is Demon-Spiritu-alism, whose literature i 8 of the same Atheistic character as that which we have been describing, and tends to the same end—No God.
The true character of the Deity in all His attributes was manifested in Christ Jesus the Divine Son during His public ministry and humiliation. To any, not of prejudiced, obstinate, reprobate niiuds His divine insight and wisdom was manifested, even.at 12 years of a^e, when he confounded the theologians of those days, and drove, them to their wits end. This divine power was manifested in His mastery over all the afflictions of humanity, even death itseU', and over the winds aud the waves. His divine power and compassion was manifested in His miracles to feed the famishing multitude. His divine mercy and forgiveness was manifested in •uch 'cases as M[ary Magdaline and the woman taken in adultery. His divine insight into men's hearts and lives, and His wisdom was, manifest in the latter case, and so many other of His actions too numerous todescribe. Not, theilpnst of all was His Divine Holiness. All tho perfections of tho Deity carao out in that spotless, life, and to crown all His. powory to raise lii.msejfi. from the, dend,, and His to ascend to tho heavens, proved J±im to be what He claimed to be—the Divine Son of God with power. ^asHe " conditioned ? " Was He hampered with the material on which tio had to operate ? Why He had,., all power over even the demons~thq ['fallnri fan^els^and ,made them 'cry' but, "Art Thou come to torment us, be fore, the time.", " All power," said' he, after ; His resurrection, "is j{iven to s,Me r iq;' the,, heaven and' the earth," and, the,manifestation ;of ; thaf power in all its fulness is yet reserved for his second advent now so close at hand; and which event, all? his true .and faithful' people; iareviongirig i for and expecting quickly. The presence of sucha'Swarm of blasphemers and atheists'.; now on the earthy-and ;who >so industriously spread their deadly poison,:proves that Christ'is about to return from- heaven in all 1 his glory as the King and judge of the earth. Then will such writers as those described above feel-and know that there is a God ; and there is a Christ omnipotent ( in power to crush his enemies into the dust and to rule the world in righteousness. Happy is the man wlio is firm on the Koct— Christ.—l am, &c, _. William Woo»;
