A FORGETFUL MAN.
"He began making calls early Wednes. day morning, and he was still at it at 11 o'clock Thursday-, night. AtHhathour he rang the'l dbdrbell of a house on Brush street, and when, no one answered he kicked on the door so furiously that half a dozen families were aroused at once. The owner of tho house came down stairs, stuck his nose out to the frost, and called OUt: " What in the name of Heaven is a 1! this row about ?" .•' W,ish 'c yappy New'rs!" exclaimed tho caller as he pushed his way into the Siall.,
"■New Year's is past, you idiot!" roared the householder, as he tried to put him out; but the stranger was too much for him, and. when finally dragged down the steps it was by the aid of a neighbour and a,policeman. ." Roland Short, this looks like a serious case," observed his Honour as the witness stepped back. ■ "He didn't have any basket out," rejoined; tho prisoner. . " Basket! Why, how long after New Year's is one to keep a basket out ? " ." I don't know what the law is," said the prisoner, as he scratched his head. " If he'd opened the door in a genteel way and told me that New Year's was over, and that hilariousness had ceased, I should have put a ten dollar bill in his hand, and passed on.", "Didn!t you, know when New Year's Day came to an end?" inquired the court.
"Not exactly. I hav'nt been in this State but three weeks,, and I'm not posted upon, your.laws and, customs. In Indiana New Year's la^t.as long. as anybody has got a biscuit ahd"a! bite of cold meat."
, "Indiana is a very nice (State, but I shall have to fine you $5,/ Mr Short. " Hl-^l'll send you tHe money from New Albany;" f replied'thei prisoner after searching his pockets. "Ofc, don't go to any trbublej Mr Short. I'll say thrity days in place of the cash, 'and "by the time you come out you'll get old years.andinew yeirs and all other sorts of years all straight in your mind.' Please stand'aside 'and give'that lady a chance;" •• ;. ; ?
