PATEA.
This day. The Patea Settlers Ask for . Arms. A very large meeting of Carlyle residents was held last night to discuss Native affairs, Mr Sherwood in the chair. The following resolutions were unanimously carried :—lst, "That this meeting is of opinion that in" consequence of the present attitude of the Natives it is urgently necessary that the district should immediately be put in a,state of defence, and that the Government be at once requested to, forward a supply of arms and ammunition here to be issued to settlers when occasion required. 2nd. " That the settlers of this meeting sign their lnames as *■ being 'willing to form themselves into, acerps for the local defence of Carlyle and request to be armed and drilled.at once.". , ■■ r / \<\ ,f; <).; Settlers here are not at all satisfied with the aspect of affairs and should an outrage be committed near town nothing could be done to assist, as very few possess arms.
