'595 The readers of "Gulliver's Travels"' have often laughed at the,- description of the tailors who made elqthes by means of mathematical calculations. That which Swift intended as a parody is, however, actually done at the present time. As soon as a new fashion comes out in Paris the proprietor of a large establishment in New York has it sent out to him; and he baß a foreman who, by means of mathematical measurements, reproduces the pattern in thirty different sizes. In thia way the belles of .-■ ew York are able to be almost as quick in having the last new sweetest thing in bonnets or robe* as the Parisian belles themselves, an advantage which the first turn to very good account. The same proprietor has a branch establishment in London, but I do not thiuk he finds Englishwomen quite so lavish in their wardrobe expenditure as their cousins across the Atlantic. I must confess that I cannot say much for the taste of the latest fashion in New York.
