In a letter to the Daily News " A.8.0.]' tells the following \ good story:—ln preparation for a contested election for one of the then called, ,'Vpofc. walloping boroughs " in a mining district of Cornwall (I do not remember which borough} pnij party built a row^of tenements /(each consisting of two rooms).in.number, I think, exceeding ten.. •I, beliave the number was twenty; Each of these tenements would hare given a rote. This manoeuvre was met by the opposite party in the following manner:—Advantage was taken of the Stannary Laws, which authorise any person who has discovered a "lode" (metallic vein) to work it, without any regard to manorial rights or surface rights. ■ The opposite party did not fail to, discover signs of a lode very near to the new tenements, and immediately sunk a shallow shaft. They quickly discovered that the course of the lode lay directly under the tenement*, and they worked under the the tenements. It was soon found that the " ground " (rock) was so hard that gunpowder was necessary, which they used in such quantities ' that the new tenements were blown up and utterly destroyed. The facts, as I understood, came out in action-at-law for the value of the huts destroyed. . \ Hard Times in the City.—Hard-up city, man (to clerk, who wants a rise): '*• Half-. a-crown a week more but— (bappy thought)—l'll tell you what I'll do for you. I'll take you into partnership."—Fun.
