Cabmnal Manning presided over a meetingron Clerkenwell Green in connection with the Total Abstinence League of the Cross. About 6000 persons were present. Cardinal Manning said there were two hundred 1 thousand known Catholics in London, and two hundred thousand more children of Catholic parents who had died in the workhouse, ■whither they had been drawn by drink, and who were of no religion at all. This would not have been the case had the League -of the Cross been established twenty-five years ago.
