Theee was a clean sheet at tho E.M. Court this morning.
We notice that the residents of the South Ward intend hearing their representatives in the Borough Council on the subject of a nine-inch watejr supply for that ward, and an explanation of their conduct upon that and other questions of late before the Council. We learn that Mr P. Birch's tender of £115 12s 6d has been accepted for repairing the Government Buildings. We have received from Mr Jefferson the Australasian Sketcher to the date of 10th May, which contains a view of the City of Hobarfc Town, likenesses of Lord Loftus, the now Governor of New Souih Wales, and Miss Dargpn, and a number of well executed views of scenery in New Zealand, Fiji and Australia. We have to acknowledge the receipt of. Messrs J. 11. Clbugh and Cos. Melbourne Station Pi iduce Beport. The recent bad weather has hindered the Borough asphalters from making much progress with the Pollen street footpath, between Pahau and Cochrane streets, and in the meanwhile the soft stuff laid on the, footpath to raise the level has been converted into a veritable Slough of Despond. To accommodate wayfarers, a number of planks hava been laid over the worst portion. It bas been enough to make a man's hair turn grey to listen to the fearful manner a few of ihe wayfarers anathematise when a false step takes them over their boot;tops, or when a minute fountain of muddy water from underneath a plank expectorates up the legs of their trowsers. It is not yet known whose tendar has been accepted for the supply of railway sleepers for the Thames and Waikato Kailway. We are informed that there are five tenders in from the Thames. . On behalf of "our boys," we must complain of the manner in which they are treated by some of our readers, if the representations made by them are to be believed. The boys assert that they are continually losing money by permitting people to ran a shilling on two into their debt, who then either deny a portion of of the liability or make some off. hand excuse about having no small change. Many of the lads acting as run boys by their earnings are the principal • breadwinners of their families, and it is very hard that they sh'or!d be made to suffer. Z.ke boys only get a small commission oa the paj.ers tliey sell, and *»U bad debts are dead losses to them. We sincerely hope taat this hint will be .sufficient, and that those owing the boys money will promptly settle up; otherwise, in justice to the lads, we will be c impelled to publish a list of the names of those in arisar. Theee is on exhibition at Mr Lawless', Brown street, a handsome painting by one of the Sisters of Mercy of the Auckland Convent. The pictuvo is ,ent:tled, " The Magdelen." The blending of, the colors is excellent and the picture possesses considerable artistic merit. In a few days will be published a list of the works proposed to be. executed by the Borough. Council dur/ng the ensuing year. ' ' ' ■ ■ ■ '■■"■><) Colonel Praser, E.M., of the Thames, and Major KeJdell, X M., of Ooromandel were passengers, to Auckland by the Eowena yesterday afternoon. •The Australasian says that 1 the proposed visit of the Prince of Wales to the. Melbou"ne Exhibition next year will cost the colony of Victoria £100,000." It has become a custom, honored by the 10 years existence of the Thames, to present our departing citizens, illustrious or otherwise, with some memento of their residence amongst us, the Baid memento generally consisting of an address ia all the beauty of green, red, and blue paint, and perhaps also a piece plate. We are in deep tribulation for fear that this time-honored eastern has become obsolete, and this is why. Our distinguished fellow citizen George Turner, erst-while bone and bottle merchant, etc., has be3n avowed to depart from our midst witnout the usual marks of respect on shaking Thames mud from off his feet. Yes, George has gone to Wellington with nothing but a letter of recommendation, wb"oh he worried out of a well-known sharebrokftr here.
