s Ministers, had under consideration on Tuesday the case of Mr Edwd". Monk, of "Wombat who has been subjected to persecution by the Kelly sympathisers. Ministers recognise the necessity of holding Mr Monk free from loss, and we understand that they will purchase his property, so as to enable him to start business in another district where he will be free from danger, and that the site of his preic'ses will be used for a police station, the situation being a favorable one to serve as a check on the lawless characters of the neighbourhood, and to enable the police to be in proximity to the supposed retreat of the Kelly gang.—Australasian. A new rifle of the Werndl system has bsen invented by Lieutenant yon Schurda, of the ■ Austiian engineers, the firing of which involves only three movements. In ihis novel aim the purcussion action is dispensed with, mechanism for firing being placed in the breech-piece. The new action is described as extremely simple, and of such a construction as to permit of all Werndl rifles, with which the Austrian army is provided, being converted into tbe new arm.
