' But; r ob' attempting; to,cross a rotten, culvert, .the near side leader, .dropped bodily through into the flood below, the four horses and coach were in one heap in ttfe stream, with ithe driver, underneath. A young man, a friend of the driver,hapjpened to be. at "hand, and^ej Qiirfipi^dlintb the stream and managed Jp_ get him from underneath^ihe coach, whiCb?ltfy-across hia body. The horses meanwhile kicked, and had';- brpken jthe coach aTgpod;>dea}pand the men set to, work to/cut the traces and get them free, which, happily, was done without any,.damage beyond some cuts and bruises. .The broken coach is left in the stream until a body of men can be gathered to get it out and the mails" jjtnd baggage are ■ lodged' in safety for the present at Carr's place:close by. :
