In the Supreme Court this morning, . the Chief Justice declined a judgment in the case, McNamara t. Norwich Union - Fire Insurance ' Company, and after stating the facts, he said he could not agree with Mr Bunny's argument that the policy contained three distinct contractj, as the premium was undivided it was as though the property insured was two distinct buildings, he therefore made the rule obsolete on the first ground, and ordered judgment to be entered up for the defendants with costs. • ■

It is stated in commercial circles that since the commencement of the current year, orders ' sent home for goods to the extent of a million have been counter* manded by cable messages. ..
The solicitors of Wellington have appointed a committee to make representations to the Minister of Justice in regard to the conduct of the business of the Courts here. ..'., ."'....' '.
. Samuel Owen was brought up at the R. M. Court this afternoon! charged with bigamy, in marrying one woman in 1872, and another at Adelaide in 1879; he was identified by a photograph. iJMsoner admitted to the detective who arrested him that he was the man, and said he would be glad to get back to Adelaide and settle the whole matter, which would end in smoke. The magistrate "committed him to prison until such time as a warrant was prepared for forwarding him to. Adelaide. ...
Although His Excellency had only just landed from the Hinemoa after his Southern visit, he presided at a meeting of Commissioners for the Sydney Exhibition. Wellington and Dunediu, from the applications already promised, take up half the space allotted to New Zealand in the Exhibition, when the remainder (15) of the local committees, "and the country districts have reported" on the space they required. Mr Dement, auctioneer, has assigned his estate for the benefit of creditors.
Mir. E. W. Carey proposes to take a party of Maoris to the Sydney Exhibition to dance the haka, and give other performances. Mr Carey has appM.ed to the Commissioners, laying his views before them, and stating if they will entrust the Maoris and the house which they purpose to send to the Exhibition to his care, he will be responsible for its safety. . ,
It is stated that Mr.. J- M. Perrier, formerly of Wellington, has accepted, the editorship of the Marlbdrough Times.
An influential deputation waited upon the Hon. J. Ballance to-day and presented a petition for a site for a gymnasium. Mr Ballance promised, to consult his colleagues on the matters. \
Justice Williams and Justice Johnston
arrived from the South this afternoon, and Justice Gilliej, from Auckland, to hold a Court of Appeal.
A movement is afoot to form a Eugby Union football club among the civil servants.
Mr George Hunter, M.H.E./has consented to be nominated for the mayoralty. Work, on the new railway wharf is being pushed on vigorously. The San Francisco mails, if they arrive in time at Lyttelton, will be at once sent on to Dunodin by express train. The Education Board is calling for designs for a new school at Newton, £10C0. .
