We very much regret to learn that several property owners in Shortland, owning land that- is now required for railway purposes, are demanding exorbitant sums for ... it from the. arbitrators. So great are their demands, and so much are they considered out of all reason, that the local authorities are seriously considering the advisability of recommending Government to alter the proposed route of the railway along a line where the necessary land can be obtained on reasonable terms and where the property owners do not stand in their own life^j^ In pleasing .contrast to the conductop^i'x^peighbors is a; Shortland storekeeper who promised the arbitrators appointed to,give whatever portion of his property that was required for nothing. Some days ago we noticed a similar instance in respect to certain land owners at Puriri.
Some maliciously disposed person perpetrated a gross piece of cruelty on a fine black retriever pup belonging to Mr K. Walker this morning. At about 12 o'clock the dog came up to his master with a fearful gash about three inches long across its back, evidently, inflicted with a knife or other sharp instrument. The police have been communicated with,, and it is to be hoped the perpetrator of the dastardly outrage will be brought to bOOk. .. • ,-. r -I' , ;.,; •-, V /'
