The great clock and carillons in the tower of the Manchester Town Hall, the greatest work of the kind in the world, d '■•< Were started on New Year's }Day by f the Mayor, many,thousands of people crowd- : ing the .square to hear the carillons. The big bell -upon which the, hours are struck, weighs 6 tons 9 c.wt, and the bella form < an almost, chromatic scale of 21, reaching within halfi ; a, note:of; two octaves.
