H. Mitchell's English Opera.
"EchesiiaaGirl."
Balfe's beautiful opera, the " Bohemian Girl," was performed last evening before a large and fashionable audience. The piece was, on the whole, a great success, and indeed there would be no reason to qualify the assertion, but that the troupe hare to contend against difficulties in the want of appropriate scenery, while the acoustic
properties of the Academy are of an inferior order. Miis Wangenheim as Arlihe was very pleasing, and in the song " I-dreamt that I dwelt in marble halls " I she received loud applause. Mr Browning, as Count Arnheim, sang "The heart bowed down " with such good effect fliat an encore was demanded. Mr Florence < was also .rewarded with an encore for his singing of '' When other lips." He was likewise encored for his excellent rendition of thearia "When the fair land of Poland," when stung by the taunts of the Count in referring to what he supposed to be his gipsy origin. The acting of Mrs Florence as tJba Gipsy Queen was very telling, and Bevilshoof could not have been placed in better hands than those of Mr Hodson, his by play being excellent. Mr Crowthersmade a sufficiently foppish Florestein. The choruses were effectively rendered. "< To-night. To-night, Flowtow's sparkling opera " Martha " will be placed on the boards.
