THE WEEK.
.: The present week, in connection , with ' mining matters, has shown a little more briskness than several of its immediate TJp to a few days ago the Thames Stock Exchange might hare been considered an institution of the past from the very small amount of business done in mining shares. The improvement in the prospects of the Moanatairi mine has had a good deal to do with the small revival we hare experienced lately. During the latter portion of last week, and the beginning of this 'the shares rose rapidly, for these dull times, Monday's quotations being, saleV at, 62s 6d. To Thursday they declined a little, but since then they have picked up, sales last night being quoted at 595. Some little business has also been done in Caledonian, Cure and Alburnia shares.,
In another column we publish a report of the meeting of the County authorities, with members of the U.P.A. aud other persons interested, ia Auckland the other day; and from it it will be seen that the Association hare not yet been able to come to terms with the County Council. The hitch is that the Association are not disposed to give what the County asserts it has expended on account of pumping, which is the sum they demand for the redemption of the pumping securities. It is to be regretted that nothing has been done, as in the meantime the water is fast gaining ground, and the mining industry in a considerable portion of the field is crippled by the suspension of pumping operations. Not only does the stoppage of the Big Pump affect the mines in its immediate vicinity but also those on the Waio-Karaka flat. During the week it, has been stated by one .y^ho might be expected to know something about the matter that, as soon as the Pig Pump starts the pumping operations at the WaiovKaraka will also be resumed. We trust that arrangements will soon be made to permit the speedy resumption of operations as already the effects of the stoppage are being felt indirectly as well as directly, and this depression will go on augmenting until something is done. We believe that a little mutual concession on the part of the directors of the U.P.A. and. the County would hare a beneficial effect. .
