PROSPECTING AT UPPER TARARU.
Messrs Goodwin, Kent and Harcourt, hare commenced prospecting operations at the old Vulcan claim, Upper Tararu, and hope soon to bo on payable gold. In the early days Mr Goodwin and the other shareholders of the Vulcan ob? tamed handsome dividends from-the ground. The principal difficulty, ifj gold in payable quantities is obtained, will be the erection of the machinery, the, road from the tram to the scene of operations being rery bad, while two of the creek crossings are destroyed. At one time there was a good road up to the claim, by which in the early days the. machinery was taken up. There is, however, a good force of water to drive crushing, machinery. The party have applied for a grant from the Government vote -in aid _of prospecting, and as the local authorities have strongly backed up the application the party hope to obtain a sum that will enable them to thoroughly prospect the
Vulcan claim and its vicinity. The proprietors of the Comstock claim (the lead mine) have three hands employed, and are sanguine of success attending their labors.
