In an engagement between Lord Chelmsford's force and the Zulus, the British lost 400 and the Zulus 3COO. The Zulus were defeated.
The Boers of Transraal are investing Pretoria, and threaten to detain Sir Birtle Frere, Gorernor of Cape Town, as' a hostage.
The King of Burmah refuses to listen to the proposals of England, which were made at the instigation of the British Commissioner in Burmah for the protection of British subjects.
Heavy snow storms impede the opera* tions of the British Army in Afghanistan.
