WELLINGTON.
This day. Daring the past week there hare been a large number of oases of violent diarrhoea or dysentery, in some instances closely resembling English cholera. There has also been a prevalence of low ferer oases in certain parts of the city, and many terminated fatally. The mortality is principally among young people. Daring the year ending Jane 31 there were 61 marine casualties, of which 52 occurred on or near the coasts of the Colony, 20 lives being lost. Nine casualties are reported as having occurred beyond the Colony, with a loss of 12 lives.
Another contingent of 50 Armed Constabulary will be sent North by the Stella.
Koberfc Drew, carpenter, burst a blood vessel and died in half an hour.
During the last eight weeks the tram* way averaged about 15,000 passengers per week. Owing to the Hinemoa haying had to convey the Hon. Mr Stout to Lyttelton, Mr Sheehan's departure has been delayed until this evening.
The child Grace Nichols, who was injured some weeks ago by a trap accident in Horokini Valley, died yesterday, though she improved so much after a piece of her skull had been removed that hopes were entertained of her ultimate recovery.
The Hon. Mr "Waterhouse's Opinion of Colonel Whitmore and the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. -
The Hon. Mr Waterhouse writes a letter to the Post regarding a " curious conspiracy against the Governmeut," the particulars of wliich were gathered from the Lyttelton Times. He says says there is not a particle of truth in the reported contents of the telegrams ; that the editor of the Times must have drawn on his imagination for his facts, or has been made the tool of some one who has told wilful falsehoods. Mr Waterhouse says what really took place was during a recent crisis. I telegraphed to Mr Hall " that there were serious dissensions in the Cabinet, that a ministerial crisis seemed impending, and that there would probably be a re-construction of the Ministry under Sir George Grey." Owing to electrical phenomenon the signature of the message came out " Wbitehouse." Mr Hall, thinking the telegram came from Whitmore, wired back a guarded reply headed "Private." Mr Waterhouse then says " Although it was evident there was some mistake in the matter, and though the telegram was headed private, that gallant and honorable gentleman did not hesitate to show it to and discuss it with his colleagues." "' To me such an action seems unbecoming an i officer and a gentleman." to the j action of the editor of Lyttelton Times * Mr Waterhouse says, "It is difficult for a man more thoroughly to degrade Irmself than the editor of the Lyttelton Times has done in this matter.'' ■ Friday. As the s.s. Wakatipu was coming into harbor to-day she was run into by a yacht, with seven or eight persons on board. The yacht capsized, throwing threo or four into the water. The Wakatipu stopped and lowered a boat which picked all up. None were drowned, though in the water quite a quarter of an hour before they were picked up. The following lands are proclaimed wnste lands of the Crown :—Ounnora No. 2, 5,093 acres j Parapete (Coromandel). 925 acres. . '
Mr Stout has been taken suddenly and dangerously ill.
Ten thousand acres in Oarlyle and Opoku survey districts, Taranaki, have been reserved as an endowment under the University Endowments Act. . A large number of reserves- for various public purposes are made in different parti of the colony.
Mr W. C. Smith and Mr Wilding, of Waipukuru, have been appointed J's.P.
