This day. James Evans has been charged with committing a murderous assault with- a cleaver on another seaman named Me Gonickle of the brig Look Out. The Domain Board to-day declined to permit the Domain to be used on Good Friday for sports in aid of Charitable Institutions. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. The Judge congratulated the jury on the lightness of the calendar, there being no offences of an aggravated character. Twenty-three prisoners were charged with twenty-four offences, six of these being old offeuder.=, and ten Maoris. All the prisoners excepting three Maoris are able to read and write. There are three offences against the person and indecent assaults, and the j remainder are offences against property. One case is that of a lodger in a hotel who entsred the bed of a married woaien ; another case is that of burning stacks, but there is some doubt as to the sanity of the accused. Frazer and Tiuno having declined the contract for raising the Taupo, the tender, of David Gouk for £6500 is accepted. Three small boys left in an open boat yesterday afternoon. They had several loaves of bread, a pound of sugar, no water, and some 1 butter. They were picked up outside the harbor, there being no wind.
