A London correspondent writes:—Just before he died, Major WhyteMelritle delirered to his publishers, Chapman and Hall, the manuscript of a new novel entitled, "Black, but Comely; or The Adrentures of Jane Lee," which will be publiihed in a few days. The death of Lady Melville, the novelist's mother, from the shock of her son's fatal fall, makes a •till sadder ending of a brilliant career. " And suoh a good fellow!" said Mr Fredi Chapman, speaking of htm to me this morning, " so generous—he used to give nearly all his money away—the very last £500 I paid him he gave away to a needy friend.'
