MINE INSPECTION WITH MINE MANAGEMENT.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—Knowing you have the interests of the whole community at heart, and especially tho mining interest, I trust yon will insert the following :—I wish to call the attention of the public to the fact that a Government officer—Thos. James, Underviewer —is in receipt of £2 per week as supervisor of the Caledonian mine. I bave*mysclf seen James' signa-^ ture on the last pay sheet of the company. I have heard many people wonder how' James got himself pitchforked into the! position of Underviewer at all. It is a greater matter for regret to myself and numbers of fellow-shareholders that the •directors should consider it wise to pay a bonus out of shareholders' pockets for aI understand the majority of the directors have little or no personal interest in the miae ; therefore it appears as though shareholders' money was being paid away with an ulterior object. No doubt it is very pleasant to make others pay for nica little bits of information obtained in an official capacity, but shareholders, I think, will object.—l am, &c., Shaeeholdeb. Thames, April 3rd, 1870.
