across Fishermen's Bend, shortening the' river Yarra one mile, would cost £476,200, and if ultimately deepened to 25 feet would cost an additional sum of £83,600. It would be necessary to retain the joint flow of the Yarra and Saltwater Eiver. A through canal would be less expensive, but it would have many drawbacks. The docks and basin in the swamp would cost £646,400, and minor works, including a steam ferry at iSpencer-street, would cost £40,6C3; and the only security against floods would be the complete re« moval of the rocks from Princes-street downwards.
