This day. Arrival of the s.s. "Wakatipu. The Wakatipu arrived about midnight last night. She left Sydney on the 25th. H.M. Wolverine sailed' for Fiji this morning. The Emerald remains here for three weeks longer. The Hermoine, for London, got away yesterday with a fair wind. One of the Emerald's boats capsized in a squall on Saturday evening, but the crew were rescued without any mishap. The New Zealander replying to an article headed "Ministerial Differences," which appeared in the Evening Post says: " Probably no Ministry was ever lest divided on any particular point than the present Cabinet is upon the Waimate question without failing to recognise the extreme gravity of the position. Ministers have made no secret of their firm conviction that the peril will pass away without much delay and without bloodshed." A public meeting of ratepayers will be held to-night to discuss the proposed municipal loan of one hundred thousand pounds. The first consignment of wheat from the Wairarapa will come to Wellington this week. The services of the Wellington Naval Brigade have been accepted. The s.s. Zealandia with the London mails of 27th Feburary left San Francisco for Auckland on the 17th of March, contract date. The City of Sydney with the March New Zealand mails arrived at San Francisco on the 26th March, one day in advance of contract date. tt- t- ii , Saturday. Mis .Excellency has accepted an invitation to a ball to be given in his honour shortly after Easter. The nominations for immigrants by this mail from Wellington numbers 205. ft The Government have promised to the Wairarapa deputation all the assistance in their power towards the Waihine River Board. The two lowest tenderers for the Greymouth and Hokitika railway contract not having taken up the contract, the Government are calling for fresh tenders. Complaints from ships captains are frequent of the ease with which seamen desert in this port, and the want of some preventative such as water police. In one night ten men deserted from the Warwick, taking their effects with them. The next night three more followed in the same way. It is said that crimping is carried on to some extent.
It is the intention of the Government to put a further quantity of Thorndon reclamation land into the market at an early date.
Mr Charles Bright gives Tor three nights a series of lectures here before leaving for Sydney. A Gazette supplement issued to-day notifies that the Hon. Henry Stuart Lyttleton has been appointed Private Secretary to His Excellency the Governor, and Capt. Edward Beauchamp St. John t> of the 35th Eegiment, His Excellency's Aide-de-camp. A full dress levee will be held at Government House on the 3rd of A pril. Sailed: The s.s. Wellington for Nelson and the North. Passengers: Chief Justice and secretary, Rev. W. J. Habens, Eev. Mulgan, Messrs Walton Bell, and Drake, Professor Shand, Mr Garrard.
The ship Boyne was chartered to-day by the New Zealand Shipping Company to load wheat for London. Two barques are loading grain for the Cape of Good Hope. The barquentine Prince Alfred was chartered to-day to load for South Australian ports. Mr George Thomas reports the produce market as follows:—Flour (Adelaide), 15s; ,flour (colonial), 9s 10J to 10s sd; bran, Is 2d ; best wheat, 4s; best hams, 9-ad per lb; bacon, B|d; cheese, B|d; maize, ss : 6d; best potatoes, £5 5s per ton; pollard, £7 per ton ; oats, 3s 6d per bushei; best butter, lid per lb.
