Annual Examination of Teachers.
The first annual examination of teachers under the Education Act was held last week at the chief centres of population throughout the colony. For the Auckland Educational District the places of examination were: Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton and,the Thames. Mr Felton, of the Education Board, acted as supervisor here, assisted by Mr Newell Phillips and Mr Halliwell. The examination for class D began on Monday last, for class PI on Tuesday, and for pupil teachers on Wednesday, and concluded on Saturday. Only three teachers out of those summoned to attend failed to do so. The total number presenting themselves was thirty-eight: one for class D, fifteen for class E, and the remainder for the pupil teachers test.
The papers for class D included Latin, euclid, algebra, French and science; those for class E, British history, arithmetic, English grammar and composition, geography, elementary science (or for female candidates, needlework, laws of health, and domestic economy) music, drawing and school management and teaching. The various papers were set by Professors Brown, Cook, and Shand, Messrs Howard, and Fitzgerald, principals of the Normal Schools »t Christchurch andDuneain.Mr Eice (secretary to the Auckland Boar J),DrLlewellynPowell (of Christchurch), Mr O'Sullivan (Auckland School Inspector), Messrs Petrie, Lee and Hodgson (Inspectors of Otago, Wellington and Nelson), and others. Some of them were sufficiently difficult, but taking one with another they were well adapted as a test of what the teachers ought to know, and should be a sufficient guarantee that those who pass are well qualified for their positions.
