Lectures on Modem Scientific Discovery.
(FROM THE EUROPEAN MAIL.) Mr Henry A. Severn, who gained considerable reputation in Australia and New Zealand as an experimental lecturer, has come to London, and is now delivering a series of lectures in the Metropolis. He is attracting many people interested in modern scientific discovery. At Camberwell the other evening he gave some very remarkable experiments in connection with voltaic energy, magnets and the electric light. One of these experiments was specially admired. On a large scale he showed the decomposition of water. The representation was made with a very powerful lantern, and the effect upon the wall was singularly clear and striking. Those present who were intimately acquainted with the latest experimental results declared they have never seen anything so powerful. Subsequently his illustrations on the electric light were given with a high, degree of interest. He exhibited the value of the new light as respects its application to views or pic- - ; tures placed in the lantern. In addition to the value of his discoveries in experimenting, Mr Severn has the merit of laying before his audience a clear account of the manner in which the forces of nature, as discovered by the modern scientists, work. He is engaged to visit Glasgow, where his lectures will no doubt prove attractive.
