The Sultan entertained Admiral Hornby and the Officers of the British fleet at a grand banquet prior to the retirement of the squadron from the Sea of Marmora. Colonial debentures are in great demand. Victorian debentures are rising. Capitalists are turning attention to Australian investments generally. March 20. In the House of Commons to-day, the
Chancellor of the Exchequer, in replying to a question, said he had heard that Russian troops had crossed the Caspian Sea, but was ignorant of the direction they had gone.
Prince Gortschakoff, in reply to Lord Salisbury's despatch of the 26th of January, stating that the action of Russian officials in Bulgaria and Roumania had been contrary to the Treaty of Berlin, says that the interpretation and application of the principles of the Treaty of Berlin are susceptible of a difference of opinion, but promises to support an equitable and pacific execution of the Treaty. The Haytian steamer Michael has been sunk after the collision with the steamer Bolivar, and 60 persons have been drowned.
