The result of the smelting of the D'Urville Island copper ore recently sent to Newcastle is said to be only about ten per cent, of copper.

Arrears in payment by immigrants of their passage out to New Zealand now amounts to upwards of fifty thousand pounds, great difficulty being experienced in recovering on immigrants promissory notes. Informations still continue to be laid against citizens for wasting water. The Mayor refused to take a poll of the citizens to decide which of the two drainage schemes should be adopted. The city solicitor advised that he had no power.
All the members of the Ministry with one exception will be in Wellington to receive the new Governor. The Hon. Mr Wilson, of the Legislative Council, will also be here. The Premier, however, will be unaveidably absent, owing to the necessity of his presence at the Te Kopua meeting. It is expected that Mr Sheehan will be just able to get back here in time from Parihaka.

Dr Gore Gillon, brother to Mr E. T. Gillon, has been appointed Eesideut-Sur-geon to the Wellington Hospital.
An evening paper asks what has become of the new Court House so long promised, and points out that in the mean time the
Government should pay Dr Bullon. eight per cent, on the purchase money towards the Supreme Court.
A road scraper, imported by the Corporation, made its appearance on the streets to-day, for the first time it has been seen in Wellington.
The Hyderabad may now be walked round at low water. When the remainder of cargo is taken out, the vessel will then be condemned and sold by the underwriters. It is considered that to launch her again would be too tedious and costly. Besides a hole in the bottom, and other injuries, her rudder is broken.
The Albion, passing Cape Campbell today, passed pieces of floating wreckage, beams and knees, being pieces of a wooden vessel, supposed to be a portion of the Southuiinster wrecked some time ago.
It is reported that a Mormon emissary has lately been busy promulgating his doctrines in the Manawatu district.
The displacement of railway points at and near Feathers ton is supposed to have been done maliciously and with the intention of causing an accident. Three times in two days it has been discovered that points have been tampered with.
The question of making illegal payments to City Councillors is to be laid before the Judges of the Supreme Court, for whom a " case " will be prepared. This is being done to prevent further litigation. •
An edition of the curious Index to the Laws of New Zealand, up to the Ist of January, 1879, has just been published.
