REPLY TO FAIR PLAY.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—l have been a little amused at " Fair Play's " effusion in the Advertiser, where he attempts to ridicule,.and endeavors to personify," A Friend " by honoring him with the position of Borough Councillor. Now, for the information of "Fair Play," let me tell him he is wide of the mark, and (to use a vulgarism) has got the wrong sow by the ear. It is no part of my business* to defend Borough Councillors. I judge actions, and adhere to my opinion formerly expressed, that the Borough stands on vantage ground, as judged by cost and result. " Fair Play " tempts me to ask him did he receive fair play from the County. He knows he did not, yet he is content to act as an apologist, in the hope he may get a permanent appointment. My dear sir, you will not; you can be retained, for less. Now, we will take a look at your No. 1 mess, that you wish attached to the Borough. I believe they might manage the cemetery, as that is a small trust. If report speaks truly, cremation is more in the line of the County. I have no doubt that the position of Town Clerk, boss of works, collector and Inspector of Nuisances, would be undertaken by " Fair Play," who is good at smells, but there is an important word called ability, that except in the last item he is sadly deficient in. No. 5 is, perhaps, the. most patent as proving "Fair Play's" genus. One chairman (how many would you like P), one engineer, one secretary, one collector: you are one of two things, an idiot or a—well, saint. The facts of the case are that, in addition to the engineer, there have been half-a-dozen surveyors and a host of chainmen and bosses, political busy-bodies ; all finding an asylum in the County, and the result has been several bush tracks and a road from Parawav to Puriri unfinished, costing more than any road of the same length in all creation. A Fbiekd.
