(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sik, —To the lovers of nature there is nothing so delightful and pleasing as a good long country ramble, and what gives an additional charm is the presence of numerous birds, with their joyous notes and instructive habits. In our beautiful Parawai how pleasant it would be to see our old friend thp rook stalking about on the meadows, and the useful starling hunting for insects and worms upon its well-trimmed lawns, whilst the laugh of. the giant kingfisher or Australian jackass (rightly named the bushmen's clock) might be heard at morn and dewy eve, mixed with the liquid notes of the Australian magpie (the miner's bird) and the wellremembered song of thrush and blackbird. To those like me, who love nature for natw^P^self, I would draw the atteifftdfl or tue paucity of useful and pleasing birds in the Thames district, and as I believe a certain portion of our game licenses go to our acclimatisation societies to keep up the stock of desirable species, and to distribute them, it only requires a few gentlemen who have grounds or farms noar us to associate themselves together for their first protection, and a Zoological Society might be established, having for its object the studying of thfl living, and not, the dead musty specimens of the mu3eum alone.—l am, &c, . Philos Obnithos.
