Lord Harris and the other English cricketers have arrived, and were waited on by the Cricketing Association, with the view of arranging for an exhibition match in aid of the Kaitangata fund. Lord Harris explained that the.arrangements of the Englishmen prevented them complying with the request.
His Worship gare judgment in the case of Police versus Dodson, of the Empire Hotel, for allowing Calcutta, Sweeps to be drawn in his hotel. He was fined £5, His Worship remarking that he would in future impose a penalty of £20.
In the case of Police versus Drake and others, for holding a Consultation Sweep, His Worship inflicted a fine of £10 and cost 3. Notice of appeal was given in both cases.
The Bible reading in schools committee wrote to the Dunedin School Committee urging upon them the desirability of re-d----ing the Bible in the public schools, and asking an opinion from the committee. The consideration of the matter was postponed.
Miss Caroline Treme, of the Otago University, was awarded the Bowen prize offered by the New Zealand University.
