I Yesterday the Athenaeum was opened for the first time on Sunday. There was a good attendance. Collier who broke a blood vessel on Thursday night is getting on all right. The police have found more of the stolen property belonging to Mr Steel, draper. The formation of a salvage corps for fires is being mooted. Saturday. The clergy of the various churches and religious denominations met to-day to con* aider an announcement that a theatrical performance would be given on Sunday at the Theatre Boyal. Archdeacon Stock and the liev. Alex. Eeid were appointed to wait on- the manager of the " Uncle Tom's Cabin Company." He promised to consult his company.
There has been another seizure of rotten fruit and an information laid.
The Inspector of Nuisances is going to proceed against several shopkeepers for wasting the Corporation water in washing the fronts of their premises with a hose, that purpose not coming within the meaning of the term " Domestic use."
The cry of a half holiday for bakers has now been raised.
The immigrants of the ship Hudson presented Captain Colville with a testi-
raonial for his ability and kindness during the voyage.
Ballinger, the rifle champion, met with a hearty reception on landing from the Taiaroa. He was loudly cheered and carried along the wharf shoulders high, along a line formed by the Artillery Rifles and Cadet Corps. He was then driven round the town in a four-horse coach, accompanied by military music. ••
It is reported that a gold bearing quartz reef has been discovered at Opaki, district of Wairarapa.
