GENERAL SUMMARY.
News from Afghanistan is to the effect that Yakoob Khan has written to Major Caranagh declining British demands, and evincing a determination to hold Cabul in accordance with orders from his father. He is collecting forces which are gaining confidence. Wali Mahomed had armed at Hazapir, and is seeking British support for his claim io the throne. He was sent to Jellalabad.
The British troops are in good health and spirits, but are beginning to feel weary of the monotony and hardship of the campaign. They would gladly see it over and return home.
Harvest prospects in India are gloomy. A serious famine prevails in Upper Egypt, and relief has been forwarded. Anarchy prevails throughout the Empire of Morocco.
It is estimated that before next year half the inhabitants of Morocco will have perished from starvation and disease.
The Sultan suffers from paralysis, and the Governor of Fez had taken refuge from insurgents in a sanctuary.
