OHINEMURI.
Tukukino la the Hell
Boad Works frstroyed.
Znergetlo Aotioa of the County Council.
A Test Question for the Law Courts.
The threatening^ of Tukukino, Tini Poaka, Hata Paka, and other natives of the Komata, to interfere with the building of the Ohinemuribridge and the eon* struction of the Puke-Paeroa road, were .carried into effect yesterday at Faeroa. It seems that the above mentioned gentle* men, accompanied by 20 or 30 of their followers, some of them armed with meres and Native spears, visited the site of the new bridge, and pulled up and destroyed the pegs and poles of the surveyor and his assistants, and afterwards pulled up and burnt the fascines on the Puke road. This action of Tukukino and his followers, was at once oommunicated to the Chairman and mem* bers of. the County Council, who determined that instant action should be taken by law, against the delinquents. It will be remembered that authority was given by the Minister of Public Works to the County Council to take such steps as the law allowed against natives found destroying, or in any way injuring the road works of the County, and, as there is a clear case against the present delinquents, the County intend teaching our native friends that neither the County Council nor the law of the land can be treated with impunity. It is the intention of the County to swear an information to the following effect against the transgressors of the law: " That certain natives, namely, Tukukino, Tini Poaka, and Hata Paka, all of Ohinemuri, on the 7th day of March inst., without due authority on that behalf, took away and destroyed certain survey pegi
and poles fixed or set up by a surreyor and his assistants, duly authorised for that purpose, contrary to the statute in that behalf made and provided."
