The performance at the opera house last night in aid of the Kaitangata disasfor realised ninety pounds. John Henry Percy, who confessed to haviog accidentally fired a hay stack at Masterton, has been arrested for forgiDg a cheque for six guineas.
It has been ascertained that the loss of the National Insurance Company oh the Masterton fire is only about one thousand.
A Gazette Extraordinary issued tonight notifies the prorogation of Parliament from the 14th of March to the 14th May.
The Commission on Higher Education adjourned their sittings till the 24th inst. The Commission will leave for Christchurch about the beginning of April. About £350 has been collected in aid of tbe Kaitangata disaster. The Hon. Kobt. Campbell is reported to have taken 5,000 shares in the Foxlon Sandon Bailway Company. claimed £5 15s 6d Ox? Henry Eobertshaw. The defendant, aa essistant storeman, objected to the claim under the Tippling Act. On'the question being asked by the Bench if he had received the goods or any portion charged in the account, he replied, " yes I have; but still, for all that, I plead to the Tippling Act." The' Bench considered that it was neither more nor less than legal robbery, and adjourned the case till next court day to consider the various points of the Tippling Act.
