E. T. Lewis, confidential secretary to the Native Minister, has been appointed Under Secretary for Native affairs in the room of Henry T. Clarke, resigned.

The following appointments are gazetted :—T. L. Shepherd to be Clerk of District and K.M. Courts at Naseby and Receiver of Gold Revenue ; J. C. Brewer to be Deputy Registrar to Supreme Court at Dunedin ; D. M. Luckie to be Government Insurance Commissioner as from 27 th February.

Friday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Times Company this afternoon a resolution was carried giving the directors power to sell the plant and paper, with the open understanding that if not sold within six months a general meeting of the shareholders will be called to decide what steps«sbull be taken.

The Customs revenue for the port of Wellington for the month ending to-day are £21,906, against £15,14W0r February, 1877.'

Sixty-three births, 53 deaths, and 26 marriages are reported during this month.

Dr Hector goes South to-morrow, and will probably give evidence at the, Kaitangata inquest; also Mr Cox, assistant geologist, as to the condition of the mine at the last inspection. A list consisting of 245 immigrants will be sent home by the mail steamer tomorrow.

An amateur performance at the Opera House to-night under the patronage of the Acting-Governor and Ministers is in aid of the Faitangata sufferers. Mr Sheehan left for the North to day. The Key. Mr Inghs says he has raised in New Zealand £600, but his expenses are £25 to £30 per week. The total amount collected in Wellington sp far towards the Kaitangata relief fund is £250.

The mail steamer Zealand ia, with the January colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 26th inst., one day in advance of her due date. :
