TAURANGA.

The Taupo Wreck.

This day.

A previous statement that the Taupo is impeding the navigation of the channel is a mistake. After considerable labor the pumps were got to work yesterday, and, though the tide was rising, reduced the water considerably in a very short time. Sanguine hopes are entertained of floating the steamer if the pumps work well. . Later. { The chances of getting the Taupo off are hopeful. By the Hawea there arrived yesterday centrifugal pumps and three Californian pumps to be used in the attempt to pump the water out of the Taupo. The former one has.a six horse power boiler, and will raise 20,000 gallons of water per minute, the other has a three horse power boiler, and raises about half that quantity. The Californian pumps work in sluices something in the same manner ai those used by gold diggars. Should the combined action of the pumps have the effect of raising the hull at all it is intended to pass a sail under her bottom and then pump her dry and tow her to Auckland; should this not be practicable she will be beached. The chief officer with the entire crew are working under the direction of Capt Worsp, the Inspector appointed by the insurance companies, at ten shillings per day and rations, and have already completed arrangements for receiving boiler on board, the main yard having been run out and properly rigged up and the topmast yard converted into a derrick.
