Chief Justice Prendergast waa sworn in as officer administering the Govern* ment at three this afternoon.

All the Ministers we^e prssent. Judge Johnston administered the oath.

The Government consider the demand of printers for an increase of wages as unreasonable at the preseat time, and they have decided to employ no Society men in future. It is understood that all the printers in Wellington intend to give a week's notice to-morrow or Monday.

A new Masonic Lodgi, holding under the Grand Lodge of Scotland, designated St. Andrew's Lodge, is to be constituted next Thursday. The dispensation has been granted by the Hon. F. Whitaker, Provincial Grand Master.

The highest temperatures recorded last month were—Christchurch, 89 ; Nelson, 85; Auckland, 84; Wellington, 81; Dunedin, 78; Hokitika, 70.

A deputation, consisting of Messrs Gisborne, Beeves, and Woolcocks, waited on Mr Macandrew, Minister for Public Works, re the Brunner and Amber] ey Bailway. Mr Macandrew promised that tenders would be called for a portion of the construction for each, and within three months.
