CALEDONIAN SHAFT.
The rise on the No. 6 lode is making good progress being now up 25 feet, but, no gold has yet been seen. Yesterday the manager on measuring found that'the s-' water in the U. P. A. had risen 169 feet since the pumping ceased. The gat it J still below JSTo. 3 level, but the draught from that level keeps it from rising ■<>^ further up the shaft at present. In course of time however, the presence of the water rising below will counteract the effect of this draught and force the gas further up the shaft. There will be plenty of warning given before thiptakes place, and there is lUtle danger^ / those employed at No. 3 level, as a winze* to No. 2 gives a means of exit! The air in the Old Golden Calf was very clpfe ,-■ $ to-day, and the manager has had all the stuff broken—about 11 loads—wound up so that should operations have to ; .^ suspended the shareholders will have the* benefit of knowing the value of theiode,. .- It may be mentioned that, the water it still issuing from the face of the drive, and " there is a decrease of the water ia the 1 winze from No. 2 level. .; >
