THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1879.

The Waikato Times of the -13th instant criticises and exposes the shallow arguments adduced by the New Zealand Times against the commencement of the Thames and Waikato Bail way from this end of the line. Hitherto we have deemed it unnecessary to notice .the mendacious assertions of the would-be " Colonial journal," from the fact that its utterances have long ceased to be regarded as an authority outside a certain disappointed official circle in Wellington. As an exponent of Colonial public opinion the New Zealand Times was ever a failure. In its palmy days, under the control of an editor who could look beyond the narrow view point of the Empire City, it was never more than a party organ, and since the paper has passed into the hands of political malcontents its misleading columns have never been free from the taint of bitter political bias. Personalities have been largely resorted to, and every opportunity has been taken to debase the members of the present Ministry in the eyes of Colonists, recourse being had to that specious and fertile style of half lying which is characteristic of the editorial Chief. We arei glad to see our Waikato contemporary is not beguiled by the New Zealand Times, or led away by the imputation against the Ministry that the works authorised are contrary to law. The Thames and Waikato Bailway was duly authorised under certain conditions. The conditions as to submitting to the Governor, <fee, have been complied with, and we hope ia a few days to see a tender accepted, and the works commenced. This will be the best answer to our cavilling friend of the Wellington Times, the Colonial journal that never possessed the confidence of colonists outside Wellington, and which is shaping fair to forfeit whatever local influence it may once hare possessed in the Empire City.
