District Prize Firing.
The firing for the first set of district prizes took place yesterday at the Government range. There were in all 65 competitors ; distance, 200, 500 and 600 yards; seven shots at each. Major Murray, the officer in command of the district, was on the ground in good time, and, after the competitors had fallen in, he read the General Government Rules, which he said would be strictly carried but By the senior officer, Captain Small of the Hauraki Engineers, assisted by Capt. Sihofield and Lieut. Denby, who had tTeen
appointed aa squad officers. The day, although fine, was very unfavorable for good shooing, more particularly at the second distance, where many of the shots (in consequence of; the variableness of the light and wind) fell short of the targets.
